Red Cross Blood Drives
The workers at American Red Cross are a vital part of ensuring that our nation’s blood supply is there for those who need it. UFCW Local 1059 is proud to support the incredible work done by our union siblings at American Red Cross. Find the next blood drive at our office by visiting ufcw1059.org/blood.
Never donated blood before? It’s easy! Here’s what to expect.
Registration
When you arrive at the blood drive, you’ll sign in and provide identification (such as a driver’s license). You’ll be provided with some information about donating blood to look over while you wait for the next step, providing your health history. If you have donated blood in the past, download the Red Cross Blood Donor app to access your digital donor card for a quick scan when you arrive at the blood drive.
Health History
A Red Cross employee will ask you to step into a private and confidential interview area to review your health history. This is important to understand whether there are any factors that may prevent you from donating blood that day. The Red Cross employee will ask about your health, any prescriptions or medications you may be taking, and inquire about your recent travel history. They’ll check your temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and hemoglobin level as well. You can speed up this process by completing a RapidPass® online survey that answers many of the health history questions in advance.
Blood Donation
Giving a whole blood donation is quick and easy. A Red Cross employee will cleanse your arm and insert a sterile needle to draw your blood. If feels like a quick pinch. Whole blood donation lasts around 8-10 minutes while seated. Once your donation reaches approximately a pint of blood, the Red Cross employee will bandage up your arm.
Refresh & Recovery
Once your finish with your donation, you’ll walk over to the refreshment area to get juice or water and a snack. If you’re feeling good, you can head off after about 10
minutes and enjoy your normal routine! And know that your donation will help save a life!!
